What We Do - Books Process
NEW YORK   *   ASPEN   *   HOUSTON   *   LOS ANGELES  *  917-846-3925  *  info@portraitsinwords.com

Each project is tailored to meet the needs and desires of the client, but here’s how a typical project proceeds:
  • We go to the client’s home to record interviews, which are scheduled in two-hour sessions one, two or three times a week, depending on the client’s schedule. When traveling to out-of-town interviews, we can schedule morning and afternoon sessions over several consecutive days.
  • After the recorded interviews are transcribed, the material is organized and re-written into an engaging, first-person narrative that retains the narrator’s voice.
  • The client gets a first draft to make corrections and changes.
  • We work with the client to select photographs and other appropriate documents to include with the manuscript⎯letters, awards, certificates, newspaper articles, family tree, recipes.
  • A graphic designer scans the photos and documents and lays out the pages in book form. Old or damaged photos can be touched up or restored.
  • The client selects the binding material and color and determines the number of books desired. People typically order ten to thirty books, but the quantity is not limited. We can produce one book or thousands.
  • The client receives galley proofs for approval, and the books are printed and bound.
